Baby Steps would like to congratulate all of our 2019 Matriculants.

Gauteng has achieved the second highest pass rate of 87.2%, the highest Bachelor pass rate of 44.5%, and has had 31 schools with 100% pass rate over the last 4 years.

After many years of teaching and researching, I have constantly seen the direct impact that the quality of a child’s foundation phase and early childhood development has on their school achievement and eventually their matric results.

Laying a solid foundation at ECD (Early Childhood Development) level leads to better matric results, which ultimately leads to better socioeconomic conditions.

People often don’t acknowledge the importance of ECD and think that they are paying for their children just to play. Parents need to be educated and understand that ECD is the most important education phase for their children as it sets the tone for the rest of their child’s schooling career.

The Department of Education has put a large portion of their budget and attention on ECD centres over the last few years. The decision has been made to make Grade R compulsory and within 5 years Grade 00 will also be compulsory.

The National pass rate has improved by 3%, which is the highest pass rate in the last 25 years. The Department of Education believes that by continuing to place more attention on Early Childhood Development, this pass rate will further improve.

Early Childhood Development appears to be one of those topics that people ignore, when it should actually be our primary focus.

According to the Department of Social Developments audit report of South Africa; 51.7% of children aged 0-4years have no access to any form of ECD and 70% of the ECD centres are not suited to provide quality education or the necessary care.

ECD Outreach project 2020

There are so many good ECD centres in Gauteng. I challenge these schools to take a less privileged school under their wing to help raise the standard of all preschools.

Let us work together in laying a solid foundation at ECD level. This foundation leads to better matric results, which leads to better socioeconomic conditions, which will hopefully raise the standard of living and lower our crime rate.

Please contact me if you would like to join me in this project or know of any school that could really use some help.

When you build a house, you build it on a solid foundation so that it will stand strong.

The same principal is applied to Early Childhood Development. Take time to make sure that your preschooler is getting quality care and education.

I know the importance of Early Childhood Education, which is what led to me opening my own Early Childhood Development centre after many years of teaching Primary School.

Let us give our children the foundation to stand strong, and be their best!
