Baby Steps would like to congratulate all 2020 Matriculants.
I would like to send out a special congratulations to the Matric girls of Assumption Convent School, your hard work and perseverance has paid off. The team work, support structure, love and commitment from the teachers and staff was a huge contributing factor to the awesome results achieved. Assumption Convent School achieved a 100% pass rate and 100% University Degree entrance!
After many years of teaching and researching, I have constantly seen the direct impact that the quality of a child’s foundation phase and early childhood development has on their school achievement and eventually their matric results. Even though Covid-19 had a negative impact on all the pupils, the Matric results of 2020 were outstanding. The matriculants still managed to do well despite lockdown because of the solid foundation they have had.
During lock-down, the area that suffered the most was the ECD centres as well as the foundation phase grades (Grade 1-3). The teachers of 2021 have their jobs cut out for them, having to bridge the gap created last year. Laying a solid foundation at ECD (Early Childhood Development) level leads to better matric results, which ultimately leads to better socio-economic conditions.
People often don’t acknowledge the importance of ECD and think that their children and just going to play. Parents’ need to be educated and understand that ECD is the most important education phase for their children, as this sets the tone for the rest of their children’s schooling years.
The Department of Education has put a large portion of their budget and attention on ECD development and centres over the past few years. The decision has been made to make Grade R compulsory and within 5 years Grade 00 will also be compulsory.
The Department of Education believes that by continuing to place more attention on Early Childhood Development, the Matric pass rate will further improve. Early Childhood Development appears to be one of those topics that people ignore, when it should actually be our primary focus. According to the Department of Social Developments audit report of South Africa; 51.7% of children aged 0-4years have no access to any form of ECD and 70% of the ECD centres are not suited to provide quality education or the necessary care.
ECD Outreach project for 2021
Our aim is to support a less fortunate ECD Centre, ensuring that as many little ones as possible can receive quality education and we can help lay a solid foundation for future learning. Please keep a look out for this in next week’s blog.
