This lockdown has been a very strange time for everyone, as a parent, most of you are trying to juggle work and child care.
Preschoolers, for the most part, need a little bit of guidance while doing educational activities. To assist you, we, at Baby Steps (and by the looks of things on Social Media, most schools) have sent home school work for our older children, and our teachers have done some teaching videos on our YouTube channel.
All of this is great for your child, but it cannot compare to the benefit of being at home with their Primary Teacher – YOU!
This time at home is the perfect time for you to teach your child independence and for them to do chores around the house, such as setting the table or sorting out washing, all of which (believe it or not) are beneficial to learning.
At school, our teachers notice certain gaps that are best taught by parents.
Children can read and do 100 piece puzzles, but they cannot dress and undress themselves. They cannot pack things away, which assists in the development of categorizing and sorting, something that is vital for the basis of math skills.
They don’t know their personal details, as an example, and age-dependent: Their name, surname, birthday, address, and your contact number.
Take this opportunity to talk to your children and to do the things together that you don’t normally get a chance to do. Don’t worry about the “work” that they are missing out on, you do not have to duplicate school. Just know that you are teaching them vital life skills that they cannot learn in a classroom.
I have seen awesome videos and photos of our parents and children playing, baking and exercising together. This is wonderful, and makes my heart so full!
Take this time to listen to the birds and to smell the roses.
The biggest benefit of this shutdown is that children have their parents!
It won’t be long until we are all rushing around again! The benefits of this time together will last a lifetime.
The Importance of Spending Time Together

- It develops positive behaviour
- It encourages communication
- It can help your child’s academic performance
- It can help your children be a good friend
Parents, you are doing a wonderful job! Have fun and enjoy your children!
